...em-Cell Rebels” by: Roosevelt, Margot This article discusses the efforts of activists in the U.S. to support stem-cell research which could help in developing cures for many of the diseases. Scientist hope, that a person’s entire genetic makeup could be transferred into a cloned human egg. 206 U.S. representatives wrote to the president, asking him to fund the research. The letter states that the embryonic stem cells can be used to treat major diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Parkinson’s, and many more, which over a 100 million people suffer from in the U.S. Currently California and New Jersey have passed laws to research therapeutic cloning, and seven other states are considering putting a similar initiative. Many universities are also fear that many of their scientists will go abroad to research on this phenomena. For this reason they want to promote stem-cell research in their states. Many Private firms and rich people have contributed large sums of money for this research. Proponents of this research also believe that in California $70 million will be generated in tax revenues from new jobs in this field. If cures are found, there will be substantial savings on the state’s $114 billion annual health-care bill. “California Faces Loan-to-Clone-to-Kill” by: Jeffrey, Terence This article discusses the initiative of stem-cell research in California. Bush opposes human cloning, “Research in cloning would contradict the most fundamental principle of medical ethics, that no human life should be exploited or extinguished for the benefit of another” Said Bush. The article also presents arguments put forth by Judiciary Chairman Orrin hatch, who is a proponent of this initiative, says that human life begins in a mother’s womb, so the mechanical wombs which produce these cloned babies will not be humans. By his reasoning it’s ok to use their bodies for our purposes. Under this policy, every human being created by cloning will be treated as a piece of property and later exterminated. 1. Identify Ethical Issue The ethical issues presented in this movie are choices the couple had to make in order to get their son back. If they wanted to, they could have accepted the fact that their son was dead, and will not come back to life. Is it moral to get back your son whom you lost? It’s like bringing back life against God’s wishes to make you happy. The parents were presented with an alternative, and they decided to go with it, and dealt with the consequences of it. The Doctor on the other hand, hid the fact that he had mixed his own son’s genes into Adam’s, creating a monster. A lot of times we forget a big force that is over us. We tend to play His role and at the end we pay for it. This is exactly what happened in the movie. They performed an action which was illegal, morally wrong, and paid for it with their own lives becoming a mess. Human Cloning is a very serious issue. It’s like taking God’s creation in your own hand. 2. Identify Legal Criminal Issue The legal Criminal Issue in this movie was the fact that human cloning was illegal in that state. Although it was illegal, Dr. Richard Wells convinced the couple to go through with it. The couple looked at the possibility...
