The individuals of the Brotherhood carry the last memories and connections to the time before the rule of the Party. The Underground is a group of individuals who oppose the rules of the government of Libria. They seek to destroy the government, along with its goals and power. The members of the Underground are willing to sacrifice their own lives to destroy the party in Libria. The government in Libria does not tolerate any rebellion. This means that the party must destroy all members of the Underground, along with any evidence of their existence. The Underground carry possessions which link them to the past and all their members carry the sense crime of emotion. Any materialistic item which portrays or renders emotion must be destroyed. The Underground conceals and conserves these items from the party, which are symbols of the final feelings of emotion. By preserving such objects and allowing sense crime, the Underground is able to rebel against Libria. Although the Brotherhood and the Underground carry many similarities by rebelling against the government, the parties of Oceania and Libria carry many similarities in the manner they control their society. The Party in Oceania controls all matters and aspects of society. This type of totalitarian government does not allow for any personal emotions or thoughts from an individual. The Party uses Thought-Police and Inner Party members to enforce the laws. Any citizen may be apprehended and exterminated without any legitimate reason. The Party uses telescreens to maintain constant surveillance of all citizens. Oceania carries an authority figure that represents the ideal citizen of the society; referred to as Big Brother. All loyalty and passion is directed towards Big Brother. The Party seeks optimal control of all aspects of society. Throughout Winston’s torture, Inner Party members enforced the fact that the Party is perfect: “There is no way in which the Party can be overthrown. The rule of the Party is for ever.” (Orwell 274).
