...his next-door neighbors legendary parties. At this party, Nick gets to meet the legendary party thrower himself, Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby is a young man that has an English accent, a remarkable smile, and calls everyone “ old sport”. Gatsby tells Nick when they first meet, “look here old sport.” He is around thirty years old who rose from poverty to become wealthy by participating in organized crime. He longed for wealth and sophistication because of his love for Daisy Buchanan. Nick says, “ Gatsby bought the house so that Daisy would be just across the bay.” Daisy Buchanan is an attractive, wealthy, and shallow young lady. She had a fling with Gatsby, but he was sent then sent to Europe to fight in the war. She then met a wealthy man named Tom Buchanan. He is a symbol of the shallowness and carelessness of the very rich. He also treats Daisy with no respect. They end up getting married. Gatsby is the one who is not corrupted by money. Everything Gatsby has done in his life is to fulfill his dream which is to prove to Daisy that he is worthy of her. Daisy and Gatsby start to have an affair and Tom becomes suspicious and confronts them. Tom reveals to Daisy how Gatsby became wealthy by participating in smuggling of drugs and booze. Daisy has to choose between the two men and she says, “ Rich girls don’t marry poor boys.” So she chooses Tom because he offers her security and the life style to which she is accustomed to, even though Gatsby is the one who truly loves Daisy. She is the object of Gatsby dream, but she just lets Gatsby die and take the blame for a murder that she committed. Nick asked Gatsby if Daisy was driving the vehicle and Gatsby says, “ Yes, but of course I’ll say I was.” Therefore the careless rich kept Gatsby from achieving his dreams.
