Which they feel a wrong or inefficient word may ruin the beauty of a poem. “But no such roses see I in her cheeks,/ And in some perfumes there is more delight/ Than in the breath that from my Mistress reeks.” One could easily argue that his use of the word “reeks” is only to accommodate the rhyme scheme and is not as clever as say “odor” or “smells rancid,” however it is the challenge of the rhyme which enhances the quality and flow of the poem. Don Patterson has said that, “rhyme always unifies sense… it can trick a logic from the shadows where one would not otherwise have existed.” William Shakespeare uses a full-end rhyme scheme in My Mistress’ Eyes Are Nothing Like the Sun to enhance the flow and cleverness of the poem. He also rhymes for the distinction of this piece as a poem rather then a standard piece of prose. Iambic Pentameter was uniformly used in William Shakespeare’s pieces. As opposed to many modern writers who write in free verse, Shakespeare stuck to Iambic pentameter which allowed for a limited number of syllables per line. This is a form of meter that allows for a very flowing read of a piece of poetry. When poetry is read it is often broken down into lines that are accompanied with small breaks. The reading of poetry becomes much more musical and outstanding when the lines are the same lengths. Even if you don’t know that the piece is, sub-consciously it will probably come off as more flowing. In the piece My Mistress’ Eyes Are Nothing Like the Sun Shakespeare sticks to Iambic pentameter. “Cor/al is far more red than her lips’ red;” “If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.” “I grant I nev/er saw a god/dess go.” All these line...
