... The fact that the villain is the narrator adds a different effect to the novel. The narrator is the villain in action but he proves in his language that he is pure of heart and whether he did the action on purpose or as a subconscious act doesn’t negate the fact that he committed a horrible act to a friend. The novel is not an ordinary hero/villain novel. The villain does not understand or know why he committed the villainous act and some may think that this fact is makes Gene the hero as well as the villain and that he is at odds with himself like Dr. Jackal and Mr. Hyde.
