Thus during that time period, for the U.S. government, if Allende had succeeded it would have set a bad example and sent wrong message to the rest of the world. Coincidentally, during the Cold War, because of the feud with the communist country of Russia, U.S. did not want any affiliation with any other country coming even close to communism. Allende was the founder of the socialist party in Chile. Moreover, in a matter of a short period of time, Allende had become a very popular and admired president. Thereafter, during only his first year of presidency, he had begun food, health, and educational programs for Chile. The majority of Chile was very poor, but Allende was helping revolutionize that. The 3% of Chile whom were wealthy, became furious. According to them, they were the only ones who were to be rich and above all. Allende was trying to equalize the balance of who was to be prosperous and who was to be penniless. Everyone, rich and poor were seeing the tangible effects of everyone being able to have cheap food, free health care, and a well-off education system. The affluent part of society felt this was an outrage, they would not be the only ones who would be prosperous any longer.
