...ltimate sacrifice. Giles Corey is a litigious elderly fellow. He has appeared in court thirty three times. Corey’s dilemma begins when he says “Martha, my wife. I have walked at night many a time and found her in a corner, reading of a book. Now what do you make of that?” (Arthur Miller, Page 40) to Reverend Hale. Reverend Hale misinterprets his comment for a sign of witchcraft, and she goes to jail to be hanged. Desperate to save his wife, Giles Corey tries to disprove the allegations of witchcraft, but it is too late and he lands himself in a predicament. When Giles Corey appears at Court, a man named Mr. Putnam starts spewing out allegations. Giles Corey rejects the allegations and is accused of lying by Mr. Putnam. Mr. Corey’s behaves very candidly and honestly. He then lands into a predicament by replying with “The proof is there! I have it from an honest man who heard Putnam say it!”(Miller, Page 96) Immediately, Judge Hathorne demands the name of this honest man. With a lot of willpower and consideration Giles doesn’t give up any names Judge Hathorne fined Corey in contempt of court, “This is contempt of the court, Mr. Danforth!” (Miller, Page 97).
