...h. At this time Thomas Jefferson was president and James Monroe closed the deal with them to purchase the land. People consider this the best real estate deal anyone could ever make. This purchase added 828,000 square miles of land, west of the Mississippi River, to the United States. At roughly 4 cents per acre the United States had purchased a territory whose natural resources amounted to a richness beyond anyone's wildest dreams. That is why I think the Louisana Purchase was a good idea for United States History. Another positive effect was the Mexican War. This helped us gain more land and control over the Mexico-America border. The war began with a Mexican attack on American troops along the southern border of Texas. The war ended when United States General Winfield Scott took over Mexico City. A couple of months later the Guadalupe Hidalgo peace treaty was signed. To me this was positive because America got more land and the country continued growing. In my opinion Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act was a negative thing to do. He wanted more land so he kicked Indians out of their homes. This act passed in Congress by only 1 vote. Jackson was convinced that the only solution to the "Indian problem" was to completel...
