UK's AIDS Position
...onomic deprivation is one of the most important barriers: poor housing, not enough food and the desperate need of money lead many into selling or trading sex in order to make a living. New epidemics that are rising among migrant communities need to be addressed; in addition, prevention efforts call for reinforcement inside of the United Kingdom and outside. Furthermore, these prevention efforts must be linked to the attempts to address the causes of vulnerability. The National AIDS Trust (NAT) is the leading policy development and campaigning organization for HIV/AIDS in the United Kingdom. It also works internationally for policies to prevent this disease. Addressing stigma and discrimination through education, strengthening laws and policies, and providing evenhanded treatment access are the main objectives the organization aims at. Mobilizing the UK and international public, government and private sectors are key aspects to increase resources, support and especially commitment in fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic globally. It is considered that greater political determination in particular is necessary if they are to commit financially. Political will and public awareness must be maintained over time to tackle the epidemic. Two important reasons support the United Kingdom’s position. First, since many people are not aware of the serious risk of unprotected sex, governmental and nongovernmental institutions have the great responsibility of educating them; this means more financial resources need to be compromised; without them, no single epidemic can be eradicated.
