Comparing Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience

... waste of time now its time to go in for the evening. The nurse in Songs of innocence watches the children play and is more than happy to do so. “My heart is at rest within my breast/ And everything else is still” (3-4) tells the reader she is content and more than happy to let the children play and have fun. The scenery of the children having fun reminds her of her childhood and how much fun it was, and how she wishes she herself she could go back and play all day. Songs of experience is a much different story. The nurse is rather bitter not letting the children stay out and play. “Your spring & your day are wasted in play” (7). Either the nurse had a horrible childhood or simply can’t go back to the days when she could run and play all day. Two other poems that are often compared are “The Lamb” and “The Tyger. In the two poems they express questions as two where the two animals come from. Who created the two animals and why were the two animals created. While the concept is the same for the two poems the questions are much different “The Lamb” is a poem that has many questions asked. A boy is asking a lamb about his origins and his creator. The first stanza is the boy asking questions to the lamb. But it changes in the second stanza when the boy starts to answer his own riddle. Ultimately re learn that the creator was God. But the way the child words his findings “He is called by thy name/ For he calls himself a Lamb” (13-14) shows his knowledge and confidence in his faith. Then the boy makes a comparison to how Jesus is like the lamb. “He is meek & he is mild/ He became a little child” (15-16). This explanation claims that only a man so sweet mild could create such a beautiful animal as a lamb. “The Tyger” is a wonderful poem about a beautiful creature. The speaker talks of how the creature is an amazingly beautiful animal. But he is also known for being a vicious animal and brining terror into the hearts of many.
