Studying in Korea
...te their students to go to cram school because it is almost impossible for them to cover every little detail about the subject since they have at least forty students in each class. It prepares students for school and helps them to get better grades. It is divided in to different classes depending on the ability of the student and it has much smaller class size which allows the teachers to maintain the whole class in the same track very easily. Since very large number of students attends cram school, they find the actual school boring because the subject that they learn at school is a review since they learn them at cram schools first. It tends to bring lack of participations in classes. In view of the fact that cram school is after school, it ends very late, usually around 11 o’clock at night. As the students get older, they come home later. It also brings the lack of time with the family. They also experience not enough sleep which makes them to fall asleep at school. When I came to the United States from South Korea, the school was very easy because I was use to Korean educational system which I had to study at least twelve hours per day. When I explained about Korean educational system to the students in the United States, they stared at me like I was crazy and with a gasp said, “Are you kidding? Don’t you ever go to sleep?” and with a smile and a quiet laughter, “It is hard but I was use to it.” I explained. They still could not understand me; actually they could not understand the educational system in Korea. Education in Korea is very serious and diplomas are expected in almost every job. Korea has the highest rate of citizens graduating from high school with 97 percent. It is very amazing to see how many students graduate from high school compare to Horlick High School which has its graduating rate with around 65 percent...
