modern day rebel

.... And mean guys...even the couple of nice teachers on the faculty they were phonies, too"(Salinger.167-168). Throughout the novel Holden explains that all adults are phonies and what's worse is that they can't see their own phoniness. Phoniness, for Holden stands as an emblem of everything that is wrong in the world and provides him an excuse for him to withdraw into his isolation and since Holden believes that society is phoney , he tries not to act like everyone else, he also criticizes them. To conclude this paragraph Holden Caulfield has been proven in many different aspects to be an effective example of a teenage rebel. Although, In many ways a very different character than Holden caulfield, Vianne, through her many risky and rebellious actions is also an effective rebel. Vianne moves to a new city in France and opens up a chocolate store during lent in a big Christian town. Vianne quickly encountered problems with the people from the town as many of them, lead by the mayor, felt that what she did was very wrong. Vianne is rebellious because she attempted to change a religious tradition set by the community by opening her store during the lent time period. Vianne had different beliefs then the rest of the town, most importantly she was an atheist, which is why she didn't follow lent and didn't feel that it was important to fast and avoid eating chocolate. Vianne found herself in somewhat of a situation with the town's mayor as he attempted to drive her and her chocolate store out of business and out of town, which also causes her to be rebellious which is very apparent when she becomes friends with the river rats despite what the rest of the town and the mayor thinks of them. The river rats are known as outcasts and the town goes to great lengths to let them know that they are unwanted, and it doesn't take long for them to want to leave but Vianne encourages them to stay in town. Although Vianne knew how the people in the town felt about the river rats she gave them a chance and in effort to annoy and rebel against the mayor became great friends with the river rats and took a particular liking to Roux, who she went on to have a relationship with and had parties in town with. In short, it is clear that although Vianne is very different from Holden, she is in fact also an effective rebel in her own ways. From what has been said and by the way of comparison it is safe to say that Holden Caulfield would be the better example of the modern-day rebel. Similar to Holden, many young teens, in a state of confusion that feel out of place choose to run away from their problems, and want to be alone. When Holden gets kicked out of Pencey High for his poor grades he decides to leave Pencey and go to New York to get away from all the phoniness that he claims is instilled in everybody around him. Also, many teens nowadays, turn to drinking, smoking and lying as a solution to solve their problems. Holden is always trying to drink at bars " Dear are you allowed to order... I can usually get them on account of my height"(Salinger 57). He also swe...
