...s that the author uses to show his feelings about the war which are metaphor, and simile. Firstly, I will consider about some metaphor that is used in this poem. The first metaphor is “Haunting Flares” on line 3 of the first paragraph. My opinion on this word is that the flares which the enemies are firing their guns in the battle field that represent many soldiers die. The second metaphor is “An ecstasy of fumbling” on line one of the second paragraph. This metaphor describes the quick manner in which the soldiers try to put their masks on. The soldiers try to put their masks on quickly but due to the chaos situation, they cannot put their masks quickly as their mind want. This is why there is said to be “Fumbling”. The word “Ecstasy” would normally suggest a time of extreme emotion, normally joy. However in this situation it is used as a word of irony as this is a completely chaos time for the soldiers. Secondly I will consider about simile in this poem. The author uses simile to explain the negative sides of the war. The first simile is “bent double, like old beggars.” This gives an idea of weakness, vulnerability and despair of the soldiers. As we know, soldiers associate with brave, strength, and courage, but in reality, these soldiers have no such things. They are afraid, weak, and despair when they are in the battle fields.
