...ered and clapped. I was so happy I didn’t think of the adventure ahead of me. Day 1 I was the first to wake this morning and so I had to wake the others. I was so nervous, as today was the day we ventured in to the castle. My stomach was rumbling and the thought of food was always on my mind. I went over to where Doughty and Touchfire were sleeping and gently shook them. “Morning,” I whispered. Touchfire sat up, rubbed his eyes and mumbled something. Doughty also sat up, stretched and said good morning. I in-turn went over to Little John and Athor and said, “Come on boys time to get up.” They both looked around not realising morning was upon them, like soldiers n a trance they made their way to the main part of the dungeon. I followed and found Doughty had laid out my princess clothes. “I want to get going as soon as possible so go and get changed over there!” As I wandered over to where Doughty told me to get changed I asked myself why I was leader, I hadn’t come up with one good idea yet. I got changed into the clothes being careful not to rip them and made sure my face was covered. I really wanted to see how beautiful I looked but I couldn’t see any mirrors so I just glided over to where the others were and twirled round. “Wow!” breathed Athor “You look…like a real princess!” “Don’t make her too big headed” moaned Doughty “We must get on!” I felt very offended at this remark and turned my back to him. “Come on guys, lets go!” shouted Little John running up the steps that lead to the castle. I had to be first in line as it was me that was to be seen first. “Right,” said Doughty as we huddled close together on the stairs “Bell you must start crying” “But how?” I questioned. Doughty grabbed hold of me and blew right into my eyes they stated watering almost immediately. I slowly pushed the door open. I heard Athor hold his breath because really underneath his thick skin his just a little scaredy cat. I took my first step into the castle and started whimpering. My face was stained with tears and it really did look like I was crying. I ran up to the guard and he turned around sharply. “Sir, sir I have lost my cat in the dungeons, It is dark and I don’t know what to do. Please help me.” The guard looked at me closely and for a moment I thought we had come to a bead end but amazingly the plan had worked he agreed and went over to the dungeon door. “What colour is it?” asked the guard in a bold voice. “Err, err, white,” I muttered. He strode down the steps which just minutes ago we had all been huddled on. I heard his footsteps fade away and so I put my hand in the air. There was an almighty crash as the door slammed shut. I ran over to my companions. “Goodbye guard number 1 whispered Athor as he put the bolt on the door. “You fools,” I hissed “Why did you slam the door we’ll have all the guards after us now and did you rub off the plan and did you get the papers!” “I got the papers,” grumbled Touchfire “As I didn’t think any of you would remember.” “I rubbed off da plan,” Squeaked Little John. “Right! Good, now we can get on with it!” we creped up to where the guard had been standing. Touchfire was mumbling to words to him self and then all of a sudden he was invisible. “I’m ready,” said a gruff voice, which was obviously Touchfire. I felt a breeze glide swiftly past me and then looked down and Little John was ready. Doughty, Athor and I hid on the landing with a sack that we had found in a corner, hoping that all would go well. All of a sudden, there was a piercing scream, Athor squeezed my sides and then there was silence. We ran into the food store and put the sack over the guards head. I was so amazed that no one has heard the noise and commotion, but pleased we had succeeded. We all scurried around the room picking up as much food that would fit into our bags, then silently but quickly tip toed out of the food store, past the sleeping guard dogs and into the tunnel of death. Athor collapsed onto the floor; it was obvious the excitement and shock had been too much for him. I told Doughty to pick him up and carry him on his shoulders. Doughty didn’t have the energy to argue with me so he picked up Athor and plodded along. Little John was scurrying ahead and Touchfire was behind limping because the guard had trod on his foot! The tunnel was horrible and gloomy. There was creatures crawling on the floor and if you looked up eyes would look down. I looked on ahead and could see the slightest sight of day light. I looked round to check if every one was okay then carried on walking. After a few minutes, I stumbled and sunlight was upon me. I put my hands in front of me but something was blocking my path. Doughty put down Athor who was coming round from his daze and drew his sword. “Be careful wiv dat fing, will ya!” Mumbled Little John who was sitting on the floor cross-legged. Doughty slashed through the thing that was ahead of me. It turned out to be a piece of old wood. “Wait for me,” I turned round and found Touchfire hobbling behind us. We waited until every one had had caught their breath then plodded through the opening. I was squinting as the midday sun was at its brightest. Every one ambled out onto the cliff edge. I looked ahead and saw the faint outline of a person, our 3rd guard. Touchfire was last out of the tunnel “Ah my back he said as he stretched out to his full height, where’s this guard then.” I pointed and then looked at Touchfire waiting for an answer. I didn’t get one so I said, “well?” “Much to far away, I’ll have to get a little closer.” I made sure very one was with us then started to walk on. “Ssh,” Whispered Doughty. I turned and looked at him. “I can hear voices in the tunnel and their heading this way, we must hurry!” At this remark, every one broke into a run and Touchfire got his staff ready. The figure was getting closer and Touchfire told us to stop. We hid behind a boulder and Touchfire was mumbling something. “Wot’s ‘appenin’,” Said Little John in his normal annoying voice. We all turned towards and told him to be quiet. Touchfire swished his staff in the air and the figure was stone. We all ran on with Little John at the front. “Can I push it off?” Whined Little John “Please, please pleeeeeease!” “Yes,” I shouted, getting annoyed with his whining. The statue tumbled down the mountainside and there was a faint sign of it smashing at the bottom. “That’ll be you if you don’t shut up,” I said sternly to Little John. “Come on you two,” Said Doughty taking the lead. The path was in sight and I felt a whole lot better but what was the path down going to be like? Day 2 We spent the night on the cliff edge last night. It was so uncomfortable and all I could think of was my bed at home. I was quite glad when it was my turn to keep watch as at least I could think of something other than my warm, cosy bed. Every one woke up in a happy mood, as we all knew there would be some breakfast for us. Doughty said we could each take an apple to eat on the way down but that would be it until lunchtime or even tea. “Right,” Ordered Doughty over breakfast “The journey down will be hard and you may be empted to give p, but don’t. Think of the rewards and applause we will get when we get back to Slinsil. We will be treated like heroes and every one will know of our names.” I took a while to think about of the words Doughty had spoken. It was at that moment that I knew why I had come on this mission. I stood up and walked over to where Doughty was. “We must leave soon, as we do not want to be travelling in the dark,” I announced “What will we do if we get attacked?” Moaned Touchfire “By what,” was Athor’s nervous response! “Well there’s Orcs, Wargs, Giant spiders, all sorts really.” Replied Touchfire in a sarcastic tone. “Don’t scare him,” I shouted “His already a bag of nerves.” No more was said whilst we cleared away the breakfast things and only the sounds of birds could be heard. As I packed my bag, I thought of the path and the things that could happen on the way down. I could see it wasn’t straight and it seemed extremely narrow and steep. To fall of the edge would mean death! Also it was so rocky and un even that it would be a trial for Touchfire. I had a funny feeling everyone wasn’t quite as ready for this as we thought we were. “Are you all ready?” Doughty called. “Yes!” Were the replies “Well what are we waiting for? Let’s go!” We all set of in a line. I was at the front with the map, next was Little John and Athor, followed by Touchfire and bringing up the rear, Doughty. The path was defiantly worse than we had anticipated it was so narrow in places that we had to turn sideways to keep our balance. All I could see ahead of me was path, path, and more paths. It seemed like we had been walking for hours and not getting anywhere. My legs were starting to ache and my feet felt like 100-pound weights. I could see the path ahead and a plateau, which was wider. I kept my sights and thoughts on this point. I stopped when I reached it to wait for the others. Soon we were all gathered together. “How much further I think my legs are going to snap into pieces,” Whined Touchfire. “And mine,” groaned Athor. “According to the map we still have along way to go but the path gets a lot wider from now on. “That’s good then,” Added Doughty, “Where’s Doughty?” “I’m ‘ere ya don’t get rida me dat easy.” “I suggest we eat our apples now and then will only have a few hours before we stop for tea.” Every one got their apples and started munching. It was a beautiful apple and very juicy. As I sunk, my teeth in I couldn’t help but think of the gorgeous apple pie, mum used to make. Almost at once, imagine being at home, reading or playing in the fields with Sam and Trigger. My thoughts were disturbed by Doughty. “Bell, Bell I think we’d better get going.” “Oh yes, yes, come on, round every one up,” Our rest was over and it was back on the path. We didn’t walk in a line this time, as the path was wider, not smoother and still tough on the legs but defiantly wider. We plodded on for an hour or two until Touchfire asked to stop. “What is it?” I questioned “Some things ahead,” “What!” Cried Athor, “What do you mean something?” “There’s some sort of creature on this very path, I can feel it deep down inside me,” Whispered Touchfire “I think Doughty should take the lead with his sword draw just in case.” “If you think its necessary,” I muttered not seeing what difference this would make. “I do!” He replied. Doughty drew his sword and moved to the front of the group. “We must get on,” He said boldly, “It will soon be dark,” With that he strode on and we all followed. An hour or two passed and Little John started to moan that he was hungry. “I’m ‘ungry, I’m really, really ‘ungry. “We haven’t got enough food for you to keep eating all the time wait another hour and we’ll have a small snack.” I replied sternly. “What was that?” hissed Athor who had been extremely quiet ever since Touchfire had asked Doughty to take the lead, “Quick hide behind this boulder!” Following Athor, we ran behind the boulder. Once we were there, I asked Athor what he had seen. “I…I…I thought I saw an orc!” stuttered Athor. He was white as a sheet and suddenly I felt extremely cold. Shivers were running down my spine and I didn’t know what to say. Doughty peered out from behind the rock. His knuckles were white as he gripped his sword with fear. Unexpectedly, Doughty twisted round. His face was blank and sweat was pouring from his forehead. He had no expression on his ace and he was breathing extremely quickly. At this moment, I knew that we were all in danger. I had heard of orcs in the tales mother used to read me, they were vicious creatures with cruel teeth, they carry sharp spears and carry sharp spears and never travel alone. What worried me the most was that they eat any creature. Panic was he only thing I could do. I tried to calm myself but it was impossible. I looked around at my companions. Athor had passed out. Little John was sitting huddled up in the corner and Doughty and Touchfire were trying to calm them selves. I soon realised that we were all going to be eaten alive if I didn’t think quickly. I shut my eyes and slowly counted to ten. By the time, I was at three a plan was forming in my head. The words eat anything living were spinning through my mind I was soon thinking what if we weren’t alive, what if we were stone. I nervously crawled to Doughty and placed my hand on his arm. Both of us were shaking and my tummy was churning. I opened my mouth to speak but the words just wouldn’t come out =. I tried again and I managed to notify him of my plan. He nodded his head and stumbled across to Touchfire. I heard whispering take place and then fumbling. Doughty staggered across to Athor and picked him up. Carefully he carried him to a crack in the wall and Touchfire pointed his staff towards him. Immediately he turned to stone. I peered round the corner and saw that the orcs were coming closer. Time was running out. I hurried Little John into a small cave and Touchfire turned him to stone. I looked for a place to hide but I could not find one ...
