Proving Why Life Isn't Fair... Feminism
... Sometimes getting too much of the guys attention can be a bad thing. Men can become to the point where they become too sexually aroused that they will do whatever is in their power to have sex with you. They have the ability to force you into sex, which is also known as rape. The definition of rape is unwanted sex. It can be vaginal, anal, or oral. “Rape is a dehumanizing, brutal assault upon a woman. Her life is put in danger; she is forced to submit to sexual intimacies with a man whose attention she has not encouraged; she is left stunned and humiliated. Feelings of shame and guilt are reinforced as she is treated as if she were the criminal. (Thomas- Guillory, Flora)” There have been many cases of rape in the United States. There would be more but not everyone tells people about it. Many of them feel embarrassed and ashamed. Esperanza gets raped in House on Mango Street. She gets forced into sex in the chapter Red Clowns. “The one who grabbed me by the arm, he wouldn’t let me go. He said I love you, Spanish girl, I love you, and pressed his sour mouth to mine. Sally, make him stop. I couldn’t make them go away. I couldn’t do anything but cry. I don’t remember. It was dark. I don’t remember. I don’t remember. Please don’t make me tell at all.” (Cisneros, Sandra) The girls on Mango Street get forced into thinks a lot. On page 55 Esperanza writes “I thought I would because he was so old and just as I was about to put my lips on his cheek, he grabs my face with both hands and kisses me hard on the mouth and doesn’t let go” (Cisneros, Sandra). Also, Sally gets her keys stolen by a boy named Tico and his friends. He won’t give them back if she doesn’t kiss them. She is forced into kissing the boys in order to get her keys back. Some men believe they can control the lives of women. A long time ago women weren’t allowed to do anything. “Women were responsible for the care of the house, ensuring that the family unit was functioning properly” (Murphy, Amanda). Other things they were in charge of were cooking, cleaning, taking care of children, and making sure their husband was happy. However, women eventually did get more rights to be more equal to men. They could vote, get a better education, and even be in the military. Women were still critisized though. “Any opinions going against female equality are mostly on individuals and less by society as a whole. These attitudes that women are the ‘weaker sex’ have gradually faded over the years by instilling in peoples' minds that women are physically weaker and emotionally less stable then men, although individual bias still remains” (Murphy, Amanda). A lot of the women who are controlled today let it happen. Al they care about is having someone who they think loves them. They don’t care how they’re treated. “Sally says she likes being married because now she gets to buy her own things when her husband gives her money. She is happy, except sometimes her husband gets angry and once he broke the door where his foot went through, though most days he’s okay. Except he won’t let her talk on the tel...
