...er Nixon took before coming president is that he was elected to become Vice President for President Dwight Eisenhower. A thing that stood out about Nixon campaign was the way he used to television. As a Vice President, Nixon took trips to South Africa where he had to deal with protester protesting the US foreign policy. One suprising thing about him being Vice President is the way he stepped up to run the government while President Eisenhower took ill a few times. This was most notable thing for any Vice President. A problem that Nixon had to deal with was the Vietnam War. Even though the war started before he came into office. He campaigned against the war saying that he would bring the soldiers back home. Nixon did act on his word. By slowly taking troops out from Vietnam. In 1970 he claimed that the invasion of Cambodia (now Kampuchea) that it was important to protect the withdrawing of troop. After a cease-fire in Vietnam, he took out all the US troops. Another problem that Nixon had to face was the Watergate scandal. In his bid for office in 1972, Nixon defeated George McGovern by a wide margin. Where months later his administration had to deal with the Watergate scandal. In which there was a break-in at the offices of the Democratic National Committee in the 1972 campaign. The break-in had leads that came from the officials on the Committee to Re-elect the President. Nixon denied that he had anything to with the break-in. As a result the courts force him to give up tape recordings which he admitting having. These tapes had telephone conversation and his office meeting that he had routinely taped. Nixon eventually gave up the tapes to the Supreme Court and the releasing of the taped showed that he halted an FBI probe six day after the break-in occurred. After the tapes showed that he did have an involvement in the Watergate scandal. And about to face impeachment. On August 8, 1974 Nixon resigned as President of the United States being the first ever President to do so. One example of foreign policy Nixon took part in is that he improved relations with Moscow and reopened the long-closed door to mainland China with a good-will trip there in Feb. 1972. A next foreign policy he took part in was on May of 1972. Where he visited Moscow and signed agreements on arms limitation and trade expansion and approved plans for a joint U.S –Soviet space mission in 1975.
