...was he would make a very good military man. In the spring of 1836 Ewing was able to get Sherman an apotintment at west point which is a very good militarty school. Sherman did very well at this appointment and was accepted to attend this school. Sherman left for west point in May of 1836. Sherman did very well at west point and when he graduated in the class of 1840 only 5 other people graduated ahead of him. Sherman served in Californian during the Mexican war as a captain but he later resigned in 1853 because he felt that the pay was not good enough and that he has a slim chance of a promotion. He made a few attempts at some business things such as law and banking both of which were not very successful. He eventually ended up in a post of superintendent of a small military academy in Louisiana. This venture did not last long either he soon after getting there resigned his post and went up north to volunteer for the union army. Sherman commanded volunteers at the first bull run in 1861 and after the Bull Run he was promoted to Brigadier General and sent to Kentucky as deputy commander ...
