... and Amanda, both, are women who had lived in Southern Belle; Southern Belle represents the wealthy town. It shows that they were in high class before. However, now, they live in low middle class which makes them try to escape from their reality. Even though they live in low middle class, they live in the past because of their habits from the past; they have illusion that they are still in high class, which is not true. For example, when Stanley is playing poker with his friends, Blanche relates “Please don’t get up” (Williams 48). Blanche thinks and behaves like she is a lady in high class; when a lady in high class comes, every gentlemen stands up to welcome the lady whatever they are doing something. Blanche may have been welcomed before like any other ladies by the gentlemen, but not now. However, she doesn’t realize her position. Therefore, Stanley tells her that nobody is going to stand up for her. Like Blanche, Amanda lives in the past because of her reality of lower middle class. Amanda also had lived in Southern Belle which represents high class. Now, she lives her son, Tom, and daughter, Laura, without her husband in St. Louis. Amada thinks that she is still good as before. She is telling the story about her youth which is exaggerated. Since the protagonists of the movie and the play, Blanche and Amanda, both, have the similar way of escaping from their reality, Blanche and Tom show another way of escapism. There are many scenes in the play and the movie that Blanche and Tom drinks alcohol, and smokes cigarettes. Drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes drinking are the two most common ways of the people trying to forget about their reality; people use them to get rid of stresses.
