Yes, he is quite intelligent and clever, but he gets beat up more than he outsmarts people. Also, Penelope did not stay faithful to her husband while he was away, rather jumped the gun at getting married to a more wealthy being, making her materialistic. Third, the Cyclopes was not like the cyclopes in the story. Ulysses in the Odyssey outsmarted Cyclopes, while in the movie he had the crap kicked out him by Big Dan. THe plot of the movie was also far different than the poem. Sure, Everett had a rough journey to get back to his wife, but it was the span of a few days as opposed to 20 years.
