not so obvious irony of Swift’s A Modest Proposal, a single literary tool dominates the rest. In this case, I will analyze the latter, A Modest Proposal.
Swift’s brilliant use of irony in his work has defined this article as the blueprint for all other satire to come.
When one speaks of a proposition as outrageous as eating babies, it is difficult to keep irony in check: it could easily leap to the surface of the page and blatantly expose
ones underlying message or, even worse veer towards sarcasm and disillusion the reader with an insult.
