lord of the flies
...d. “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here.” (Matthew 28:5-6) This explanation of the death of Jesus Christ can be connected to the aftermath of Simon’s death. “The body lifted a fraction of an inch from the sand and a bubble of air escaped from the mouth with a wet plop… Simon’s dead body moved out towards the open sea.” (Golding 170) The description of Simon’s removal from the island after his fatality seems somewhat magical and can relate to the magic disappearance of Jesus after his death. Throughout Lord of the Flies, the unusual, supernatural and unexplained characteristics of Simon are the same as some of the mysterious, extraordinary and paranormal characteristics of Jesus Christ. Secondly, Simon can be related to Jesus Christ due to the evidence that both figures perform numerous selfless acts. Simon stays with Ralph at the beginning of the novel to help build shelters for the boys. “ ‘Simon. He helps.’ He pointed at the shelters. ‘All the rest rushed off. He’s done as much as I have.’ ” (Golding 55) Simon knew he must help build shelters rather then go off and play with the rest of the children. Simon is again displayed as a kind, courteous and generous individual when he walks past the younger children who cannot reach fruit for themselves. “Then, Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands. When he had satisfied them he paused and looked around.” (Golding 57) When Simon reaches for the children until they are satisfied, it directly relates to Jesus Christ and the feeding of five thousand. Jesus took five loaves of bread and two fish, gave thanks, broke the loaves and created a feast to fulfill five thousand men, women and children. “They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.” (Luke 9:17) Simon’s kindness towards the smaller children on the island can also be tied to events where Jesus himself was sympathetic towards children. In an event where several parents were bringing their children to Jesus in hope that he would bless them, the disciples of Jesus did not believe he would have time for such a thing. The disciples scolded and shooed away the parents telling them to leave. “When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.’ And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.” (Mark 10:14-16) Simon’s unselfish ways and generous personality give him the resemblance to Jesus Christ. Finally, the similarity between the death of Simon and the death of Jesus Christ gives one reason to believe the two characters have been directly related. Before the death of Jesus Christ, he was tempted several times by the devil. “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.” (Matthew 4:1) The devil basically told him to prove himself of who he really was; the Son of God. The devil was willing to provide all the kingdoms in the world if only Jesus would bow down and worship him. Jesus did not give into temptation when being confronted by his enemy,...
