This being said, on the night of December 11th, 1847 when Camila and her lover Friar Uladislao eloped on horseback their community was outraged. Even her family denounced her. Her father wrote in a letter to Rosas that this was ‘the most atrocious and unheard of event in this country’. However if he had not denounced her it might have seemed that he condoned his daughter’s actions and then he and the rest of his family probably would have been punished or even killed. Rosas, being the strict and un merciful dictator that he was sent out the arrest order for the two lovers. They were to be brought back and separated, Uladislao to a public prison, and Camila to a convent where she was to repent. However, the couple managed to outwit the rest of the nation by changing their names and posing as teachers. They settled in the town of Goya. They opened the towns first school and were surprised by the number of attendees. They became popular and loved by all that knew them. Unfortunately this is what led to their demise. The local Justice of the Peace thought the world of them and when he heard of Camila’s pregnancy he threw them a celebration that the whole town could attend. The problem though, was that at this celebration another Friar was in attendance. He recognized Uladislao from the church and ratted them out. The next day they were taken into custody. Rosas, ordered the two to be confined separately, he thought that Camila would repent and show remorse. When she didn’t this outraged him even further. Without trial he sentenced them both to death by firing squad not even taking into account that Camila was pregnant. The execution of a woman was not unheard of, but if she was pregnant the law made a concession for the unborn child. The woman’s execution was to be postponed until the baby’s birth. Yet in his rage Rosas ordered them both killed the next day. That night a priest came to Camila’s cell and baptized her unborn child by making her drink holy water and sprinkling ashes on her head.
