Terrorism
...to serve. At this time we see more and more terrorists operating outside their national boundaries. The international fight against terrorism is hampered by conflicting views as to what actually terrorism is. Not every one of us can realize that terrorism is flourishing throughout the world at this moment and for today there is no effective solution found against it. Besides that, some individuals that we share this planet with recognize those that we call terrorists as their heroes. “One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter”. The deep roots of the problem lie in the nation, religion, and self. Some nations see themselves threatened by outside forces (for example by western culture, which has bad influence on traditional ways of living of eastern countries), they believe that their religion, and society, and whole nation is threatened by foreign beliefs, therefore their self is also under threat. Here appears a group action (and “group responsibility”). Seeing themselves as a weak side in unfair position, when direct military action is impossible and peaceful demonstration seldom useful, the easiest, fastest and more effective strategy used by those who we call terrorists would be the one that achieves its goals not through its acts but through the response to its acts; the violence is the beginning and its consequences are the end. Terrorist’s actions aim on psychological results, in order to get what he wants which usually is public attention, He needs to be heard, and to achieve that he will shoot somebody even though it makes no difference to him personally whether that person lives or dies… but he does care about media, which in order to accomplish success in it’s own business searches for good stories that would attract more readers. Bruce Hoffman, in his excellent book 'Inside Terrorism', explains that a typical terrorist campaign moves through different phases as the group and its motives gain wider recognition: 1. Attention - The terrorists grab attention through media coverage of dramatic, violent acts. 2. Acknowledgement - They gain acknowledgement, perhaps even sympathy and support, for their cause. 3. Recognition - The terrorist group is recognised as the spokesman of the people they claim to represent. 4. Authority - They gain the influence to make changes in government or society. 5. Governance - The terrorist group consolidate their power, effectively becoming the government. We, humans happened to like scary shocking stories about others, so the system works for those who started it. As a result, the event often does get media’s attention; everyone is shocked by what happened, and first of all will try to find out why did such things happen. At this point the one who struggled to be heard gets all the attention. We often have different groups responding for a specific terrorist attack at the same time, which makes it difficult to figure out who actually did it; but they all use a chance to say what they want to say to people who never listen to them. It’s not too hard to figure out who is on the winning side in this situation; people have been killed, others terrified, terrorists got what they wanted, so did media, even thought it’s employees also are potential targets. One might see the relationship between terrorists and median as some kind of cooperation. Something must be done to break this well working against humanity system. The base of it should be destroyed, but no one knows where to find it. The fact that actually plays the main role is hidden in ourselves, in our psychology, in what influence we get from what we see, hear, and know. But since no one can get the needed information in all of a sudden by himself, even if he or she was a witness of what happened, we mostly rely on coverage of media that caries the responsibility to research the issue and deliver the story to us. But to keep our attention it often makes the situation even worst, trying to make the picture full of action. There could be a study how to change modern media. And since we all are different it might work not for all of us. But what is obvious is that what we get from news should be not entertainment nor scary movie, but real facts and information. Because we all have the right to be informed it might be difficult to hide all shocking pictures, but the way the events are delivered to us must be changed. There could be a new law of censure that bands media from delivering “useless” scenes to public. Lets just analyse all what we receive from one news broadcast. Most of the time we find not much of what does make sense to us. We are often showed the small scenes which are very tiny parts of what is actually happening. It does not answer any of our questions but confuses us even more… and in most of situations gives us a great feeling of a terror, which makes things even worst. On the other hand, the society must be educated how to use media and know how to select the right knowledge to make correct conclusions. While terrorists claim that they “must get the world’s attention so that it will notice and end the oppression” the “world ” and each part of it tries to tighten security threatened by those who reach for it’s “attention”. This makes the life more difficult and puts individual rights and freedoms under the risk. “War of civilizations” sees no borders; today’s Europe is seen by many as a battle field. But after September 11th most attention towards the issue started to concentrate in the USA, which after the tragedy took the position of a leading country in war against terrorism. The strong decisions have been made. The FBI has been designated as the lead agency for countering terrorism in the United States. To deal effectively with the threat, U.S. counterterrorism introduces the basic policies: - To make no concessions to terrorist demands, recognizing that to do so only invites further terrorism. - To be determined to seek out relentlessly a...
