Ralph is elected and he assigns another boy, Jack to form a separate group made up of all the choirboys. They would be the hunters. The kids then decide that they need to make a big fire to attract any ships passing by. Soon, the fire gets out of control and burns up part of the forest. The boys move on and the hunters are set loose to find some food. They attempt to catch a wild pig, but fail leaving them all hungry and miserable. This causes Jack to become obsessed with the act of hunting, which eventually leads to the group of hunters to slaughtering and decapitating a cow. The cow head was then put on a stake and considered an offering to ‘the beast’ of the forest. Soon after, Jack and the hunters attack Ralph, forcing him into hiding in the forest.
