Oppression on Stories read in class

...the leader of the group Darry chooses not to go to college, but instead to stay home and take care of his brothers. Also, they stick together by encouraging each other to stay out of trouble with the law. In another story titled El Hoyo the people of the town band together against their oppressions. To explain, there was an incident in the story where a house burnt down and the whole town banded together to raise money to build a new house for that unfortunate family. Also in a story named The Pen of my Aunt, A woman, her maid and her “nephew” escape and form an underground railroad. To explain, Madame, Simone, and the stranger flee France and form an underground railroad to help people during the war. Banding together is not the only way to resist oppressions. Second, there was the way of fighting back. Don’t just sit there and let those hardships bully you. These characters didn’t. For example, in chapter 1 of The Outsiders, the greasers fight back against the Soc’s. To explain, when a greaser named Ponyboy gets jumped by some Soc’s, the rest of his greaser gang shows up to protect him, and fights off the greasers. Also, in the story named El Hoyo, a city fights back against a store manager. To explain, the manager at a store didn’t want any Chicana’s (female Chicano’s) working in his store so he fired them, and the whole city fought back, drove the manager out of town and gave the Chicana’s their job back. Fighting back and banding together aren’t the only ways to fight back against oppressions. Third, the characters in the stories remained courageous.
