In the Australia of the 21st Century, White Australia is Dead and Multiculturalism Rules.
..., quite a large chunk of our population is of Asian or islander background, and most of these people are successful businessmen, in contrast to the cheap labourers they were used for in the 20th century. Good examples of immigrants who have become very successful businessmen are Bing Lee and Ken Lee, who opened the chain of specialist electrical appliance retail stores “Bing Lee” all over Australia. The first of these stores were opened in Fairfield in 1958, just as the White Australia policy was starting to be abolished. It is also obvious, that migrants can come from all over the world, and have to undergo the same set of rules and have the same rights to enter the country. This is another point which shows us that White Australia was dead, as migrants had to take the test in any European language. We’re now a democracy where all people, no matter what race, gender or beliefs are able to vote once they’ve reached the consented age. This shows us, that the white Australia policy seems to be quite dead. However, people could argue that though the White Australia policy has been abolished by law, it’s still not completely dead within our society. We are constantly reminded so by the racial outbursts and comments made against people who are not of white background such as Asians, Africans etc. There are also many members of society who are still firm supporters of the White Australia Policy and believe that it should be in place again. One such person is Pauline Hanson who believes that Chinese people are going to take over Australia and therefore they should all be sent out of the country.
