He used this to free the patients from their cage(the ward). He was able to plan a fishing trip that was said to be therapeutic by his friend the doctor. He also made two very strong bonds with patients on the ward. The first was with Billy Bibbit. Billy became very fond of McMurphy especially after McMurphy taught him to dance. When McMurphy was not present to defend himself from accusations, Billy was there for him:”What about him teaching me to d-dance? What about that Harding? Where is he making muh-muh-money out of teaching me to dance”(234)? The second bond was made with Chief. He helped chief break out of his shell and become relatively normal again. When McMurphy was having a fight with the orderlies, it was chief who stepped in and helped out. The other big one pulled the crowd apart and grabbed mcMurphy around the arms from behind. McMurphy shook him off like a bull shaking off a monkey, but he was right back. So I (chief) picked him off and threw him in the shower. McMurphy also “healed” people much like Christ did. Instead of making a blind man see he helped a patient overcome his fear of talking by continually associating with him. Before he came on the ward, emotions were a thing of the past for the patients McMurphy successfully brought that aspect of life out of them again.
