There are three philosophers who are held responsible for the creation of the Haiku; Basho, Yosa Buson, and Kobayashi Issa all lived during the Edo-period (1600-1868). Although, there are three great writers of the Haiku, Basho is considered the father of Haiku. He began his reign by writing derivative verses, but broke free from the conventions of Japanese poetry, that at the time, had a very elegant form with refined styles of the Japanese court. He began to explore his surroundings. Has he traveled, he kept a journal and Tanka. Here are some examples of Basho’s work: Autumn moonlight a worm digs silently into the chestnut. Lightning flash what I thought were faces are plumes of pampas grass. Haiku has emerged as one of the most popular poetic forms of the 20th & 21st centuries. The form, with its brevity and pinpoint illumination of the spiritual, appeals to a contemporary audience that yearns for meaning in a chaotic and rushed world. In some ways, haiku dovetails with some aspects of Post-Modernism, in its capacity to reveal telling moments and express spiritual loneliness. (Cranberrydesigns, 1) The Sonnet is the most influential forms of poetry. The Sonnet has a 14-line form. The term SONNET is created from the Provencal word SONET & the Italian word SONETTO. Both words mean little song. The sonnet follows a strict rhyme scheme and logical structure. The sonnet was introduced into English by Thomas Wyatt in the early 16th century. The 14-line form was popularized by Petrarch in the 14th century with his work, “Canzoniere” a sequence of 366 poems, most of which were dedicated to an idealized lover. Petrarch’s work influence many European writers such as Dante and Boccaccio and eventually spread to England influencing Chaucer (Cranberrydesigns, 1). Many sonnets were inspired by the Petrarchan tradition. Originally, sonnets were to express romantic thoughts, but throughout time, its purpose changed greatly.
