...assion. Though, I’ve never been admitted to a hospital myself, I have been surrounded by relatives who have been in and out of hospitals all their lives. From the occasional visits to the doctor and through countless chemotherapy sessions, it left me wondering what I could contribute. The satisfaction I get from doing volunteer work, particularly in hospitals coupled with the challenges of the scientific field proved to be a great attraction for me to the occupation. As a thirteen year old, I took to heart how a consultant oncologist, treated my mother who was diagnosed with breast cancer with such skill and compassion. She treated my mother as a fellow human being and not just another disease to be outsmarted. I understand better the demands of the profession, especially the need for bedside manners. Whilst under attachment to HUKM, I was given the opportunity to follow several doctors doing their rounds. The doctors were very thorough in treating their patients and knew how relate to the patients, particularly in terms of bringing themselves down to the patients level. Befriending the terminally-ill elderly and accompanying a young patient undergoing chemotherapy was indeed a rewarding experience. From my time there, I’ve learnt the emotional demands and time commitment required by physicians by watching them meticulously schedule their personal lives around the needs of their patients. My visit to the Autisme Centre in Klang every fortnight has made me a more compassionate human being through my time spent teaching and coaching the children. I acquired patience as teaching the children did not guarantee instant results. Frequenting the old folk’s home during my holidays, taught me that love and care should transcend racial or age barriers. My tenure as a mentor for the interactive club helped me better my communication skills and helped me to see the importance of commitment in realizing a mission.
