These cartels will do anything, in a violent way, to save their drugs. Across the region tens of thousands of farmers have seen both their livelihood and land destroyed (Nadelmann 94). The pesticides and herbicides that are used to stamp out illicit crops frequently cause lasting environment damage (Nadelmann). A lot of farmer lost there crops all because the army thought it’s been drugs. “The war of drugs has cut a swath of misery and corruption throughout Latin America,” said Nadelmann, a reporter in Latin American. In 1998, D.E.A. reported that drug-related corruption existed in all branches of the Colombian government, within the prison system, and in the military. Throughout Latin America, drug traffickers are tying to bankroll elections to buy politicians (Unknown C17). The drug cartels will pay anything to get the heat off them. Colombia is the epic center of corruption (Unknown C17) Allegations that drug money helped President Erenesto Samper finance his election (Unknown C17). If the cartels get the president of a country, then they are unstoppable export drugs. Pablo Escobar served on the alternate member of the parliament in Medelin, Colombia (Unknown C17). Escobar gain a lot of power and influence of politician, but also the people Colombia help to gain his power. The smaller the country, the easier the drug cartels can gain and purchase influence (Unknown C17). Some countries in Latin America came out of dictatorship and are easy to be corrupted. The smaller country too, because their power are weak. The Latin American countries will do everything to stop this war. The war took some of the counties money and they are finding new solution to stop the war. The Colombian Supreme Court actually over turned a low calling for prison terms possession of small quantities of drugs (Ellison). The Colombians are tired and look for same way to stop this year. A poll is commission by the U.S. Information Agency said that five to six percent favored legalizing cocaine and heroin (Ellison). 42 percent said that penalties should be eliminated for consumption of cocaine (Ellison). Also in Brazil, the senate is now considering a bill that would eliminate jail terms or drug consumption motivated by concern prison harden small time user into big time criminals (Ellison). Latin America counties are trying to legalize drugs. Some presidents said the legislation is far too radical. The United States is fighting a hard to stop the drug trade. Most drugs are illegally import into America. President Bush Sr. aids Colombia by authorizing $65 million in emergency military assistance (Bernard 143). This plan is called The Andean Strategy. This plan is to provide military, economic and law enforcement assistance to the Andean government as they fight cocaine (Bernard 143).
