Because during this time period races weren't as big of an issue. You can still tell though that there is some racial issues but minor compared to racism in the 1830's. For instance when Dana tells her aunt and uncle that she is getting married to a white man they object at first and the only reason her aunt agrees with her is because she believed the children's skin color will lighten. When Kevin tells his sister that he intends to get married to Dana she is appalled that she is a black woman which surprises Kevin because she wasn't racist before. In the 1830's there were blacks that were slave and a few free blacks. Blacks and whites didn't all have the same right. The interracial marriages were not allowed. If there was an interracial marriage it was very rare. So there were no interracial marriages but there were a few interracial relationships. We learn this in Dana's 3rd trip to the past when Kevin goes on the wild journey with her while Dana has to disguise herself as Kevin's slave and Kevin is her master. Neither of them had told people that they were married and even if they had someone in the south would think they were joking whites and blacks don't get married they would think. Kevin was even left behind in the 1800's for 5 years because he didn't make the trip back home with Dana and had to try and adjust to the life there. If you went from 1976 to the 1830's and was used to being married to a white man when in the 1830's you couldn't even talk to a white man without addressing him as sir or master or acting like he was above you. You had probably gotten killed or severely beaten if you addressed a white man by his first name if you were a slave. You abso...
