...ng The Wars and The Stone Carvers. The final novel that I took into consideration was The Hero’s Walk by Anita Rau Badami. I was very engaged and excited after going through this novel, because of the unique culture involved and the fact that I can relate to the story. I am a second generation Indo-Canadian and have also endured the clash of tradition and modernity. About three years ago, I visited India for the first time and realized my unique Indian heritage. I was shocked by this unique culture and the many traditions in India. I was astonished, because I was more accustomed to Canadian traditions and had never imagined the reality of my Indian culture. For instance, after witnessing an Indian marriage for the first time, I felt as if I had entered a whole new world. The setting of a village in Bengal seemed very appealing, because I had also visited many Indian villages during my stay in India. I also enjoy the plot of this novel, because it contains many sad moments, however, the laughter in this novel is tremendous! I generally enjoy a plot which has both depressing and amusing moments. The Hero’s Walk also appears very popular because it won the 2000 Commonwealth Prize for fiction. It also took me forever to find a copy of this novel, because almost every bookstore in Calgary was sold out of The Hero’s Walk. This novel has every element in which I find appealing in a novel. These include the ability of the author to include courage, desire, traditions, modernity, and family aspects all into one novel.
