The result has been an enhanced police effort to combat drunk driving, coupled with legislatively mandated increased penalties. There are various techniques that are being used to catch and deter drunk drivers, some of which are increasing the number of officers assigned to the traffic unit, creating incentives for making more arrests, launching media campaigns, and using roadblocks and checkpoints to stop and question all drivers ( Adler, Mueller, and Laufer 157-159).
