Concern over drunk driving has increased noticeably during the last several years, with groups and organizations making the public aware of the seriousness of the problem. A few of the most important public policies that have been implemented are Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Remove Intoxicated Drivers (RID). The result has been an enhanced police effort to combat drunk driving, coupled with legislatively mandated increased penalties. There are various techniques that are being used to catch and deter drunk drivers, some of which are increasing the number of officers assigned to the traffic unit, creating incentives for making more arrests, launching media campaigns, and using roadblocks and checkpoints to stop and question all drivers ( Adler, Mueller, and Laufer 157-159).
