Story Of An Hour
...uring this period of history. The Story of an Hour represents a single hour in the life of Ms. Mallard. Throughout the story certain events take place in which Ms. Mallard believes will change her life forever but is bitterly let down in the end when she comes to find out her husband, Mr. Mallard is still alive. In Kate Chopin’s story, she describes many strong emotions that women usually repress during an unhappy marriage. Chopin’s opinion seems to suggest that freedom is far more superior then being married. At the beginning of the story Ms. Mallard’s heart problem is mentioned, this comes to play a significant role throughout the whole entire story. The first reaction after Ms. Mallard hears of her husband’s death is not far from what the people reading the book expects to see. She is deeply bothered, cries and tells everyone downstairs she wants to be left alone. She heads back upstairs to her room were it is calm and peaceful so she can relax and think. While sitting on her chair in her bedroom, she begins staring out her window and grasp the sense of new “life” in the outside world, something she has never experienced before, and something she would like to experience. The duration of hour in her bedroom happens to make a noticeably big change on her outlook of life and personality. Throughout their marriage, Mr. Mallard had been living a normal life while his partner was imprisoned and had no idea what the outside world was all about, she had never before looked to the future with any brightness, only dread. After learning that her husband is dead I believe Ms. Mallard sees it as an opportunity for a chance at a brand new one. She could hear a weak but pleasant song, smell the clean air after the tender rain, even the patchy clouds seem to be disappearing slowly in the powerful sunshine in the end. Ms. Mallard finally realizes the feeling approaching her and possessing her controls her total soul and body. It’s the feeling she has been waiting for her whole incomplete life. All these features meant that a wish in her heart that was quiet at one point is alive and kicking and she was finally going to have a chance to have familiarity with it.
