...es were small and almost all of my students fell into one of the groups identified as suffering from an “achievement gap” in our mandated testing results. My greatest success came from my own efforts to maintain a good relationship with students and to involve the people at home with the students in the educational process. However, not every contact produced great results even where parents were involved and helpful. A key element is the attitude of the individual student. My own efforts produced mixed results in this area as well. I find, however, that teaching techniques, involving parents, reviewing data, and my personal involvement are all worthwhile. I am the person the students associate most closely with in this class. It is important that I maintain connections with adults in the students’ home, but my relationship with the students is of greatest importance. Regardless of which teaching technique I employ, it is my commitment to the class that is of value.
