Many immigrants sought to escape difficult conditions such as poverty, famine, land shortage or religious or political prosecution in their native countries. Other came to make money and return to their homeland. Regardless of the situation America was a country where many came to seek paradise and a hope of success in this land of opportunity. A famous poem “The New Colossus”, by Emma Lazarus is graven on a tablet within the pedestal on which the statue stands. “ Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…Send these the homeless, tempest-tost to me…I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” These lines can show us the theme of what liberty and opportunity had meant for the new comers. The Statue of Liberty symbolized the mother of exiles who welcomed people from worldwide with the warmth of her lighting torch. Poets like Emma Lazarus have written poems about life in America for immigrants.
