Barbiturates were invented in 1864 when a scientist mixed acid from apples and animal urine. In 1903, barbiturates were discovered to help with sleeplessness (Clayton 14-15). Barbiturates are taken orally in the form of a pill or capsule (Information). Barbiturates are depressants, or downers, that affect the brain. Depressants slow down the body and mind of the user by reducing the amount of activity in the central nervous system. ... Over 2000 kinds of barbiturates have been derived from the original acid (Information). Barbiturates are very dangerous and many alcohol and drug counselors agree, “There is only one difference between a drug and a poison and that is the dose” (Clayton 15).
