Apparently, the church was situated at the north end of the village of Swavesey on a low gravel 'island' separated from the mediaeval town of Swavesey to the south by the Navigation Drain, which used to allow boats to reach the village from the River Ouse. It is not known when there was first a church at Swavesey, but there was definitely a priory that was established there before 1086. Now hardly anything is recognisable of the remains of the church which probably stood on this site before the ‘Norman Conquest’ of 1066. The nave is clearly broader at the tower end than at the chancel arch, and this may be a sign of the layout of an earlier building that could have been built around the 15th century period. Two adze-cut stones, which can be seen in the Lady Chapel at the southwest corner of the chancel, may also represent the work of Saxon masons at that time.
