But when he called me to say, 'Hey, I'm thinking about writing this thing for you.' Um, that was like, for me, that was the best. Q: Did you have to teach [Mike White] a thing or two about the school of rock? BLACK: Nope. He knew what he was doing. Q: You guys listen to the same thing? The same bands? BLACK: Yeah, but I had a lot of opinions about what music would be in the movie because, you know, if I'm singing – especially if it's coming out of my mouth – I wanted to make sure it was something I thought was kick-ass. Q: How did Richard Linklater [the director of School of Rock] become involved with the project? BLACK: Well, when the script was done and we were talking about who was going to direct it, someone suggested Rick Linklater. Well Mike and I were really excited about that idea because he's got some great films under his belt Q: How did you like working with the kids? BLACK: I liked it a lot. The thing is, they're not like your typical Hollywood ten-year-old actor-kids. Those kids can get really annoying, especially the parents of those kids, the stage moms, constantly looking for an angle to get their kids more famous. These kids weren't like that, they were just, you know, were really enjoying the experience, even though I could tell they were pretending like it wasn't a big deal. I could tell they were having the time of their lives. Q: Can you guys really play? BLACK: I'm probably the worst musician of all the kids. That was Rick's number one thing, I think.
