The estimated cost of monitoring employees e-mail usage is said to cost $140 million dollars a year, this estimated is calculated by the sales of surveillance software . E-mail is monitored for a number of reasons, from protecting the reputation and image of a company, to maintaining employee productivity and preventing illegal downloads of software and music . One example that is commonly used is this; every e-mail that is sent out is comparable to having one thousand company spokespersons, communicating to clients worldwide . One other prime example would be an employee sending an explicit e-mail to co-workers, creating possible litigation problems for the company.
