Hurricanes The night of September 5, 1996 and the early morning hours of September 6, 1996 were unbelievable because it was Hurricane Fran time. My family watched television to keep up with the storm until around 10 p.m. when the power went out. After that, we relied on candles and a radio to keep us up to date on the storm. During the night while Hurricane Fran was roaring through North Carolina, the wind gust to 75 miles per hour and torrential rain fell. My sense of hearing also kicked in that night because I could not see outside since it was so dark but I could hear trees snapping in the distance and pieces of buildings and houses being shaken loose by the relentless wind.
