Sydney Carton shows that he would do anything for Lucie when he says, “If my career were of that better kind that there was any opportunity of capacity of sacrifice in it, I would embrace any sacrifice for you and for those dear to you” (188). This shows that Carton’s willingness to give his own life for Lucie’s happiness was strong because he was in love with her. This is significant because this shows how Carton has changed, and it truly comes out that he would play the Christ-figure role in the book when Dickens portrays that he is being enlightened. Carton, with help from others, sneaks into the prison cell to trade places with Charles Darnay to save Darnay’s life and the happiness of Lucie and the rest of Darnay’s family. Carton not only enabled their happiness, but also ensured his spiritual rebirth. Carton represents the sacrificial hero who is slaughtered of his own free will so that society might renew itself. Sydney Carton sacrifices his life for Lucie and her loved ones and is brought back to wholeness from his waster existence through his noble sacrifice and becomes a hero. Charles Darnay, Doctor Manette, and Miss Pross exhibit their ability to change from average people to legendary heroes due to their strong love for Lucie and the sacrifices they make for her. Charles Darnay exhibits self-sacrifice when he returns to France in an attempt to save the life of his family’s former servant, Gabelle, who was incorporated into the scheme of the Revolution. This shows the selfless nature of Charles Darnay when he gave up the happiness that he had in England to help save Gabelle who was not an important character in his life unlike Lucie and little Lucie. Darnay knew that he was risking his life to try and save someone who was not very important to him, but by being noble Darnay tried anyway. Doctor Manette is shown to sacrifice his own mental health when he suffers a relapse of his prison-born mental unsoundness by allowing the nephew of his nemesis to marry his daughter, Lucie. Doctor Manette knew that by bringing Darnay into his family, he would have painful memories to overcome but let that go for the happiness of Lucie and because of her dearest wishes.
