Characterization: Marlo Morgan Marlo Morgan is an American middle – aged woman with colored blond hair. She has a daughter who’s married. Marlo lives in Kansas in her contemporary lakeside property and works in her securely established health practice. She’s very curious about socialized medicine, in which you eliminate profit from the health – care system, where disciplines of medicine and natural practitioners work together. She’s really cheerful when she receives the call from Australia but doubts wether to find peers truly dedicated to health and healing of being involved in a new form of negative manipulation. Marlo feels that she’s a confident, educated female, self – supporting and for as long as she could remember there had been a yearning in her soul, to visit the land on the botton of the globe. Nevertheless, Marlo never dreamed of what she was going to experience Down Under and it’s an obvious culture shock for her. At first she can’t cope with the loss of her belongings in general with the giving up of her civilized life she used to lead in the USA. In spite of that she adopts and accepts her new role in life amazingly quick. Marlo is curious and enthusiastic about new experiences otherwise she wouldn’t have gone on a walkabout. Although she is a mentally strong person she gets to know her physical limits. She believes that she’ll die several times but the composure she learnt from the Aborigines forces her to carry on. This journey changed Marlo’s life. She turned more calm and she learned to appreciate the real values of life. Furthermore she is in possession of a sacred wisdom and it is her unique vocation to spread the message of the Real People abroad. The Real People The Real People refer to themselves as the oldest Aboriginal tribe in Australia. The live as nomads in a large group and they prefer the extended family structure. Each member of the tribe, however, was baptized a particular name which refers to his special skills and qualities. They are called for example Great Stone Hunter, Memory Keeper, Time Keeper or Regal Black Swan. This tribe lives in complete harmony with nature and believe in its power and its spirits. Actually they take things from nature but when they have fulfilled their purpose they are taken back to their origins. The Aboriginal’s relationship with nature works trouble – free. They are not in danger of taking harm from a natural disaster because they don’t destroy mother earth and they don’t have to fear revenge. Moreover, this tribe eats everything nature provides: for example ants, snakes and worms. They have their own traditional customs, rituals and beliefs to which they stick closely. Furthermore they rely on values like community, friendship, honesty and respect for each other. One outstanding feature in their way of life is their way of communicating. Their sense of community is absolutely strong and thrilling and they know each other as well so that they can send messages through telepathy to each other. But unfortunately the Real People do know that mankind is on the brink of disaster and that’s why the’ve stopped to reproduce. Actually they are exterminating themselves for the sake of their descendents. Themes: The Clash of Cultures In this story two completely different cultures come into conflict. Although the great differences the representatives can live in harmony together. Marlo Morgan on the one hand is used to the Western World and enjoys a comfortable civilized life. She sticks to material values like her lakeside property, her medicine practice, money and a high lifestandard.
