Hamlet Sane or Insane
...ated. In the beginning of the play Hamlet has to cope with his father’s death. Hamlet encounter’s his father’s ghost after accompanying Horatio and Marcellus in the castle corridors, during the midnight hours. The ghostly being informs him that his uncle Claudius is his murderer. He instructs Hamlet to seek revenge against Claudius. Hamlet is shaken up by this turn of events, he is confused his uncle killed his father and then he married his mother. He begins to see that Claudius killed his father just so that he could marry Gertrude and rule over Denmark. Even though Hamlet is shaken-up by this turn of events, he agrees to avenge his father’s death. This first set of events helps us to see the severity of Hamlet’s situation. Hamlet’s life is now devoted to seeking and gaining revenge for his father’s death. Throughout the play readers may see that Hamlet’s situation is very difficult. As a god fearing man he does not want to commit a sin in anyway, however murder is seen as a sin. This results in a man versus self conflict he is torn between his religious beliefs and his desire to avenge his father’s death. He is overcome by his desires he decides to put aside his religious beliefs and he decides to murder his uncle. Hamlet later confronts his mother and tells her that he knows who his father’s murderer is. His quest to seek revenge has made him seem a bit insane. Even though Hamlet wants to seek his father’s revenge his religious beliefs will not allow him to murder Claudius during one of his attempts. During his second attempt to kill Claudius, Hamlet pauses because he is busy praying. As stated before Hamlet is one of the most controversial characters that William Shakespeare has ever created.
