Abortion

...tion is a religious belief, not a provable biological fact. It is said that personhood is linked with viability, which is the ability to survive as an independent entity (Edelin). The next question that arises from this is, is abortion morally right just because the infant isn’t viable? Many people who are personally opposed to abortion for religious or moral reasons also believe that it is wrong to impose their values by civil law on everyone. You don't have to like abortion to respect the right of choice. In my opinion, I believe that abortion is definitely a religious issue. Organized religion, primarily the Catholic Church and the "religious right," is the backbone of the anti-abortion movement and is a cause for great concern among pro-choice religions, who see anti-abortion laws as a violation of religious liberty (Legal Abortion: Arguments Pro & Con). While researching throughout the web, one thing that I noticed was, many people that receive abortions do not have God in their life. It is Gods plan that each act of conception should lead to a baby. The question is “where do you know where to draw the line?” For instance, consider this argument: 1. A human with a brain wave is a human, 2. Killing a person is morally wrong, 3. Therefore, killing a human with a brain wave is morally wrong. Today, EEGs show that third-trimester babies display complex brain activity similar to that found in full-term newborns (Prairie Avenger). According to Grobstein, from the moment in the third trimester that the brain starts running, the fetus can experience the self/other perceptions that form the basis of human consciousness, therefore, the fetus has brain waves. A statement that I believe everyone should live by is, “Society uses cessation of brain activity to define when life ends. Why not use the onset of brain activity to define when life begins (Avenger)?” The next position that I have decided to take is being for abortion. Your probably wondering how I can say abortion is ok after I just proved why it was wrong. Now, before you start letting all of these thoughts run through your mind, consider the next few arguments that I am about to discuss. Today, there are many young teenage girls getting pregnant. The rate of abortion among 15-19 year olds has doubled between 1990 and 2001, rising from 21 percent of those becoming pregnant to 50 percent (Half of Pregnant Teenagers Choose Abortion). With this in mind, the first thing that runs through their mind is the word “abortion.” Whatever the case may be that they decide to receive one, it was their choice, and nobody else’s. One may decide to receive one because they feel that they aren’t ready to become a parent, they don’t have the money, or in other cases they find out that the baby is mentally retarded and will not be able to live a normal life. To begin, let’s take the first argument, which is that one is not ready to become a parent. For instance, the young woman is in school and feels that she would not be able to give the care that the baby requires. What are her options? She could either have an abortion and continue her education or career, or have the child which may cause her to drop out of school or not be able to work. This means that the mother would be uneducated, while also having a high chance of being in poverty. In my opinion, if she would have the child, there would be a high chance that she would be in poverty. It is statically proven that people who are poverty stricken ha...
