...ws exactly what the girls were by giving such a descriptive thought. Sammy goes on to tell about his buddy “Stokesie”. He says the only difference between him and Stokesie was that “Stokesie was married and had two babies up on his fuselage already”. This leads the reader to believe that Stokesie was just a much of a “know-it-all” as Sammy was. He does not give enough information about Stokesie to really draw a conclusion on, so in all fairness, you have to trust in Sammy’s opinion. He describes the customers as sheep. The impression he gives is that all the customers act the same. Going up one isle and back down the other, saying that a person could light dynamite off in the A & P and basically no one would pay any attention to it. Sammy’s store manager Lengel comes in the picture in the latter part of the story. Sammy describes him as being “pretty dreary”. He says that Lengel hides behind a door marked “Manager” all day, but at the same time he says that Lengel doesn’t miss much. When Lengel gets after the girls for being in the store “improperly dressed”, he patiently argues with them and tells them the next time to “come in with their shoulders covered”. Sammy wanting to be the hero and hoping that the girls pay attention to him tells Lengel that he quits. In his mind he thinks that the girls will think that he is cool or something and come running to his side. But unbeknownst to him the girls don’t pay any attention to him and leave the store. Now this is where Sammy doesn’t seem to know what he actually was doing, he had told Lengel that he quit, so quit he did.
