...hts in the courtroom and in Congress, there are gay characters on prime-time television shows, well-known public figures openly discussing their homosexuality, and there is virtually no one who can claim that they have never had contact with a homosexual. Marriage is the coming together for better or for worse, hopefully enduring, and intimate to the degree of being sacred. It is an association that promotes a way of life, not causes; a harmony in living, not political faith; a bilateral loyalty, not commercial or social projects – at least that is what I was always taught. Should the definition of family include gay and lesbian partnerships? Is legalizing same-sex marriages right? In my opinion: same-sex marriage is not a matter of right or wrong, it is a question of fairness. Many people say same-sex marriages are wrong because the Bible says it is wrong; I agree, but who am I to judge. Same-sex marriage is the historical evidence that times are greatly changing, and morels do not mean very much these days. Throughout human history people have entered into same-sex unions because they loved one another and desired the intimacy that close companionship offers. To say that same-sex marriage is a novelty is true from the point of view of a twentieth-century American, but is false from the point of view of the ancient people. The United States insistence on heterosexuality in marriage is a denial of formal equality for gay and lesbian citizens. The defense of marriage act prohibits federal recognition of same-sex marriage and allows individual states to refuse to recognize such marriages performed in other states.
