The novel's title is a reference to an attempted interpolation in the Qur'an, as described by Ibn Ishaq in his biography of Muhammad (the earliest surviving). The interpolated verses are known as The Satanic Verses. Many Muslims find Ibn Ishaq's story deeply disturbing and reject it as mythical. Many Muslim scholars also reject the story as historically improbable and weakly attested. On 14 February 1989 Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, issued a fatwa (death sentence) for the writer of the Satanic Verses, which is against Islam and all those that helped for publication. He gave the fatwa because he couldn’t except such big insult like “The Satanic Verses” about prophet Mohammed and islam. On February24 Khomeini placed a three million US dollar bounty for the death of Rushdie. Rushdie was forced into hiding, moving from one safe place to another. Since then, fearing for his life, Rushdie has been living under police protection until 1998. Finally Iran officially lifted the Fatwa. The Satanic Verses refer to an event in Muhammad's life. This event is recorded in the Qur'an. “Never did We send a Messenger or a Prophet before you but when he did recite the revelation or narrated or spoke, Shaitan (Satan) threw (some falsehood) in it.
