hello
...her actions are quite contrary to how she is suppose to lead her life according to her culture and religion. Mrs. Bhamra is the typical Indian woman who wants her children to grow up and become excellent people. When she comes face to face with Jess’s love for football, she is not a “happy camper.” She is very strict on the Indian culture and her religion, so she exceedingly believes that her daughter should spend her time cooking Indian dishes and taking care of the house instead of “running around half naked” playing football. When she first found out that Jess was playing football with the boys at the park, she banned Jess from playing soccer anymore. Even though she does not always agree with their actions and disrespect of her advice, she always shows her inner devoted side by portraying love and care for Jess even at that time in the movie when she knows that Jess is playing football behind her back. To Jess and most teenagers, Mr. Bhamra’s picky attitude toward Jess’s actions are annoying and worthless but this is the sign that Mr. Bhamra truly cares what Jess is going to do with her life. Mr. Bhamra seconds his wife’s strict approach on Jess and soccer but later on finds that Jess is going though a “version” of him. When Mr. Bhamra was younger, he played at a cricket club but was kicked out because of his cultural beliefs. This makes Mr. Bhamra a bit lenient on Jess playing soccer, but still strict. Mr. Bhamra, throughout the story is portrayed quite similar to Mrs. Bhamra, culturally and religiously strict. The one who got Jess into the whole “Girl’s soccer team” was the English girl named Jules. Jules is one of Jess’s best friends who was always there for her. Jess and Jules were going though the same type of phase and were undergoing similar ups and downs. For example, Jules mother was very dejected to see Jules playing soccer. The mothers of Jess and Jules didn’t want their daughters to be playing a man’s sport. They would rather want them to take part in doing girl things. Through out the story, Jules is shown as a free girl who is lightly spoiled by her father. She also takes the leader or captain spot of the girl’s team when Joe is not present for the moment. Acting as a considerate friend and mentor, the and Jules helps Jess become known as one of the elite. This movie includes a great mix of culture as the Indian culture is mixed in with the modern day European culture of girls having equal opportunities and options as boys. Jess is caught in the middle of the culture clash and just wants to play football. The Indian culture in this movie is shown to be quite different than the European culture. The strict Indian culture vs. the more lenient European culture is a terrific clash in thi...
