Differences between Erickson and Piaget

.... as an individual matures neurologically, they as a result, develop psychologically ,from one Cognitive stage to the next. Erickson’s theory deals with EIGHT stages of Human Development where he uses specific age groups of individuals, whilst Piaget theory dealt with FOUR stages of Cognitive Development, which uses age approximations of individuals. Erickson’s Psychosocial Stages of personality development proposed that Personality Development occurred over the entire life span whereas Piaget came to believe that the fundamental development of all cognitive abilities takes place during the first 2 years of life. Erickson’s stages of development show that each stage contributes to the development of self and defines roles, attitudes and skills for us as members of society. He believes that a series of basic psychological conflicts determines the course of development for us as individuals. However Piaget believed that what changes during development is the child’s ability to make sense of experience and emphasised on HOW people think instead of WHAT people think, making it applicable to people of all cultures.
